Job Overview:

We are looking for a part-time General Assistant to provide support in the daily running of our Walkerburn shop. Our shop is a warehouse so the candidate must be prepared to work in this environment. Tasks will be varied and a flexible and enthusiastic approach to the role is required.

The candidate may need to maneuver our work van from time to time, so applicants must be 25 years or over for insurance purposes.

Duties will include:

  • Assist and advise customers
  • Take incoming calls from donors, and organising collection of goods
  • Assist with the pricing of donated items and booking stock onto the computerised point of sale (POS) system
  • Assist with moving stock around the warehouse
  • Support volunteers on shop floor
  • Occasional manoeuvring of our work van, so must be aged 25 & over with a full manual driving license
  • Comply with all Home Basics policies, procedures, practices and regulations
  • Help ensure adherence to all health & safety requirements and guidelines
  • Undertake other duties as appropriate to the post

Key Terms and Conditions

  • 11.5 to 15 hours per week. 5.75 hours per day, 10:00 – 4:15pm, with 30 minutes unpaid lunch break
  • 2 weekday shifts; days to be discussed at interview stage
  • Alternate Saturday cover, 10:45-2:15pm
  • Occasional overtime may be available
  • We are a very small team, so flexibility a must to cover staff holidays/absence
  • Annual leave 15 days per year, 2 weeks to be taken over Xmas & New Year
  • Salary paid into bank account on 21st month

Skills & Experience:

  • Confident using electronic till system & Google Docs
  • Experience of office systems, filing, and organisation
  • Good literacy and numeracy
  • Good knowledge of the geography and road systems for the Borders
  • Knowledge of social media would be helpful
  • Logical thinker, good problem solver
  • Proactive
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Flexibility to be able to multi-task

Personal Qualities:

  • A good level of fitness required for lifting and moving furniture
  • To be positive and self-motivated
  • To have a problem-solving approach when required
  • Being polite and courteous
  • Excellent communication skills
