Welcome to your local furniture re-use charity.

Home Basics is a small charity based in the Scottish Borders, with outlets at Walkerburn and Hawick.  Established in 1999, our purpose is to help people on low incomes to furnish a home at minimal cost, which is achieved through the generous donations of reusable household items from Borders residents.

Our priority clients are people and families who are referred to us by Scottish Borders Council Homelessness Service and by other support agencies in the area. We also accept self-referrals from people on means-tested benefits which gives them a generous discount on prices.  We operate a social enterprise model of business, and surplus items are sold to the general public to raise funds for our charitable work. Occasionally we give items away to clients who are in a desperate situation, and always try to assist people who are disadvantaged wherever we can. Some items (those in frequent demand and short supply) are specifically reserved for our beneficiaries.

Our staff team has grown to 11 people (6.5 full-time equivalent) and we also rely on some 40 regular volunteers across the two sites. Many of our volunteers are also beneficiaries. Our board of directors currently comprises of 6 volunteers.

We operate two vehicles which we use to collect items (free of charge) from donors across the region and to deliver items bought from our depots.
